last week i started putting together things
for the kids to do this summer.
next year i will start my list in march,
instead of the weekend before.
soon i had a very long list with weekly themes,
lesson plans & field trips.
i did lesson plans for 5 yrs at la petite
and i honestly enjoyed putting them together
back then.
it was no different this time, especially since i was able to do my own research for art ideas, books,
videos, field trips, make supplies lists, etc.
only difference was back then my boss gave me
petty cash to use.
now i have to pay for it all myself.
so my biggest task was keeping it all relatively cheap.
we visited the library and picked up some books for this week & next week's themes. i also found a few scholastic dvd's to use this week. i had two of the three binders already, and printed a lot of worksheets to go with the themes straight off of sites i found on pinterest or google. i've also been signing up for free state travel guides. colorado's book came this week, including a fold out map. the only problem with getting travel guides, is it makes you want to go to those places. i may be in trouble when the book for hawaii gets here!
i decided i wanted to focus on books for our first week.
classic kids books, enjoyable stories,
ones i can come up with journal entries
and art projects for.
author's like dr. seuss, h.a. rey, maurice sendak,
to name a few.
our first story came via a scholastic dvd.
the kids LOVED this story.
emily read it at school,
but the video's narrator was so fun.
the story is about a pigeon that finds a hot dog and a little duckling that asks him what a hot dog tastes like, etc., never having one before. eventually the pigeon decides to share the hot dog. so the kids made pigeon/duckling faces and a hot dog to share. these aren't pretty or super artsy by any means. i just did a quick free hand job on the things they'd need to cut out. i did these mainly to practice fine motor skills for aiden & to let emily do art, which she loves. i wasn't trying to be indepth today, but instead get a feel for how well they were going to work together on them. especially since i hid the kid scissors from aiden and now i can only find one pair. ha!
when they were finished, they journaled about what they like to share.
no one drew a pair of scissors, so the scissor sharing should probably be kept to a minimum.

ah, and darth vader made an appearance during our coloring time, too.
next, they played a dice math game.
emily's teacher gave her the dice & idea for this game,
so we put them to good use!
aiden: practiced writing numbers, counting, & adding them together. he absolutely loved the game, the praise, and of course, the sucker he won in the end.
emily: continued number writing practice, writing/solving basic addition problem, as well as double digit addition problems for her bonus round.

i still have a few more themes that i'm trying to put together for beach, flight(we're flying this summer, so this falls during the week we're gone :)), cooking, fun & games--sports/board games/obstacle courses, etc., but the ones listed and linked are the themes we will be tackling first this summer.
