'New Moon' Movie Breakdown

okay. i've had 4.5 hours of sleep now, so i can get back into the movie event of the year. i have been waiting to so long to see this movie and check out all of the changes from the book to the movie. twilight was far from anywhere near the book. it pretty much just had the same characters in it and that was it. 'new moon' was completely different. it's amazing what a difference a larger budget and new director can have. (i promise i will soon get back to normal blogs that have nothing to do with 'new moon'.)

so let's dive into the movie. if you haven't seen it and don't want it to be spoiled, run away!

• ***the intro was dead on to match the book. this was one of my favorite parts on the movie.
• they totally added a scene into the movie(it has jacob, so i don't care), but then bella and edward are saying lines from after bella's graduation in 'eclipse'!
• jasper has a twinge of a southern accent this time, as he did in the book. loved it.
• they merged the scenes of edward and bella watching 'romeo and juliet' for english and edward's telling of the volturi--instead they watched the movie in class and edward talked about the volturi partially in class and in carlisle's study.
• the intro to the volturi is awesome...bringing the painting to life deal, as well as the volturi waltz from the new moon score.
• emmett only speaks a couple of times, but he always says something funny.
• we never really hear all about carlisle's beginning as you do in the book. i would've liked to have seen that onscreen.
• the papercut scene was good, but not as drawn out as the book.
• edward's decision to leave came about quicker than in the book. in fact most of the movie is bam, bam, bam. this happened, then quickly this happened. there was a lot of material to put in that time slot. maybe that was just the first time...the second time around the movie seemed a lot slower and i really got into it.
• the search for bella was short-lived, but had a little more, showing the search party and all.
• i really liked the camera circling a depressed bella in her room showing the months passing. her writing e-mails that never reach alice was a good add on. i wish they would've added the chapter 4 intro "time passes" paragraph. they never mention that she's working at newton's sporting goods store or how she spent all her time after edward leaves doing homework to take up her day.
• the nightmare scenes were filled with emotion and kristen did a good job of showing that. there were only a few times when you see bella clutching her stomach, holding her hole together.
• they did add a scene of her riding on a motorcycle, when she first experiences the hallucinations of edward. the book had her walking towards a bar and seeing him.
• jessica was so funny in that motorcycle scene.
• bella acquiring the bikes was quite different...the scrap yard.
• there was a lot of focus on age between she and jake. very little mention of his vw rabbit and they have him driving it, making his maiden voyage to the movies. the age bantering was shorter, wish there had been more.
• the majority of the movies scene was in the book, but they added a part where jake gets angry at mike that was not in the book.
• bella and jake's "fight" is emotional, but i always felt it was more emotional in the book.
• the wolf fight is awesome.
• the wolf pack never discusses a plan of action to use bella as bait for victoria or that victoria is even after bella.
• i do think that one of the other great scenes is the merge of charlie and harry hunting for the wolves and bella's cliff diving scene. the music in it really puts it all together nicely. victoria never speaks, but the visual of her is amazing.
• they add in scenes from twilight, flashbacks of bella's attack from james, that help viewers who never saw the first catastrophe to understand what happened.
• when jacob answers the phone at the cullen house and talks to edward, he knows that it's edward...in the book edward says that he's carlisle. also, jake says charlie is arranging a funeral in the movie, instead of AT a funeral. there's no wolves out in the car waiting for jake to check on bella and head to harry's funeral. again, all crammed together.
• bella and alice fly fast to italy...they show a plane over head and then they are in the porsche. kinda weird.
• bella's run to the clocktower is a great scene, too.
• edward's "sparkling in the sun" is a lot more obvious in this one. it's very different from the first flick. the look of it is very close to "beam me up, scottie".
• the volturi scenes. makes you want to move on to 'breaking dawn' to see them in action again. very powerful.
• poof, bella and edward are back home. weird again. i wanted to see rose apologize to a half asleep bella and charlie yell at edward when he's carrying bella in the house.
• charlie tells bella she's grounded for life. very tame voice. not what i was expecting. more authority, disappointment in his voice would've been better. where's the angry dad, honestly?
• the vote. fastest vote ever. again, emmett is so funny.
• the drive home...but they stop to talk to jake somewhere else. no jake tattling to charlie on bella for having a motorcycle or charlie yelling, "isabella swan you have one minute to get in this house...". again, i need the angry dad moments.
• edward hitting jake and making him phase mid-air almost made up for taking the charlie scene out.
• the ending line...wow.(i'm not telling you what the last line was!)

i hope that you who have seen 'twilight' will look past that disaster and go see 'new moon'. it really was such a good movie. hopefully i will be watching it again on sunday!! :)
